the boot

yesterday ky was fitted for a boot that he will have to wear for the next 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 weeks in order to heal the fracture of his great toe on his left foot. the boot is a beast...much larger than a toddler's foot and required kev to pull out a saw and saw off the end simply so ky could walk. after many, many tears, ky is finally trying to walk with the boot. it is not a pretty sight though. he is pigeon toed and sometimes tries to walk on the side of the foot rather than the bottom. he has attempted to ride his bike and play a game of baseball with koby, so we are optimistic these are signs we are heading in the right direction.

his skin on the toe has been "filleted" and requires a burn cream to be applied once daily, gauze and tape. his nail bed was also injured and as a result, he will most likely loose his toenail. because he is so young, the fracture should heal just fine. his body will grow extra bone surrounding the injury and then over the next year or so, any bone not needed will essentially dissolve.

WARNING: pictures contain images of toe that are not suitable for the old, the young, those who hate the sight of blood, anyone with a weak stomach, anyone with a stomach at all for that matter, mothers, fathers, grandparents, cousins, friends, relatives of any kind, anyone who has OCD tendencies related to the feet or toes.

fractured

the big toe is fractured. we will be going back to the doc tomorrow so that he can get fitted for a special boot. we will get more info at that time.

waiting...

we are waiting to hear from the radiologist as to whether or not ky's big toe is broken or fractured. he was a big boy today as he experienced his first x-ray. he is not allowed to walk on it until further notice...until then let me just say i am getting quite a workout! this kid is solid!!!!!

ouch!

what do you get when you drop a glass table on a big toe?

OUCH!

thankfully the glass did not break, i don't believe the toe is broken either. extremely painful though and difficult to walk on. as i write he is slithering across the living room floor in attempts to get to a different chair. poor kid! one thing's for sure...the child has never sat in one place, nor sat so still since his first few weeks in the womb!

update: he just slithered back...apparently the other chair was not quite as comfortable as my lap. this simply means more cuddles...happy to oblige!

pools open!

Today Koby, his friend Michael, and Ky decided to take the plunge for the first swim of the season. While the 76 degree water proved to be a bit chilly at first, two hours in all three were still going strong. By the looks of things, this should be a very fun summer.

time flies

I guess it is pretty obvious that I have been neglecting our blog as of late. To say that "time flies" seems quite an understatement. I feel as though I have been simply going through the motions, beaten down by the daily grind, trying to stay on top of things, but quickly realizing that is simply not happening. How is it that our life has become so busy? Why is it that every night I promise myself that I will do better tomorrow and then tomorrow becomes just as today? Breathe. I think sometimes I forget to do that. And when did 24 hours become such a short period of time?

So a lot has happened since the last post:
1. We took a trip to Chicago to visit Big Papa and Legoland
2. We took a trip to Wisconsin to visit Auntie M, Uncle Don and Grandma Woodstra
3. Koby started soccer
4. Koby started tball
5. Kevin started softball
6. Ky learned how to ride a bike...(finally!)
7. Koby lost his 2nd tooth
8. Ky had his 3 year check-up 41 1/2 inches and 38 pounds (off the charts!)
9. We went to a Whitecaps baseball game with Namie and Poppie Briggs
10. We got a new car (long story)

I am trying to not only remind myself to breathe, but to slow down and enjoy the little moments of each day. As simple as that sounds, it is rather difficult. Yet all I can do is try.

to our sweet baby ky,

Three years ago today, I held our new baby in my arms for the first time. He was bruised and beaten after a quick birth, had a full head of dark hair, and weighed a whopping 8 lbs 15 ounces!

Three years later...he is often still bruised, has a full head of curls and weighs, I'm guessing, almost 35 pounds!

To our sweet baby Ky,

Happy 3rd birthday! You bring us such joy, make us laugh and even make us cry. You have the ability to get under your brother's skin like no other. You are rough, you are tough, you are 100% boy. You love to sing and play the guitar and have rock star in your blood. You are constantly scoping out your next snack or asking to play with David next door. Your scream pales in comparison to that of any young girl and your laugh is contagious. The curls that grace you head make many swoon and your big blue eyes sparkle.

Dad and I love you. Our hope is that you will continue to grow in God's love and grace. That you will love. That the smile never fades from your lips or your heart despite whatever life has to offer you. That you know you are a child of God, belonging to Him, and that He will provide whatever it is you need in life. That you understand the blessing of family, that your brother truly is a gift from God and not just someone to harass or beat up on occasion.

Have a wonderful birthday Ky! We love you!

Mom, Dad and Koby
