spike it please

The boys went for haircuts today. After initially asking his hairdresser to shave his head, Koby settled on the spiked look. That is, spiked with blue tint added too please.

Sam Wiggle and the Shimmy Shake

Now that American Idol season is in full force, Ky has been even more dedicated to making it to Hollywood. Make sure you turn off the music below at the bottom of the blog page.

president's day at the Ford

The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum was free to the public today for President's Day and I thought it would be a great trip for the boys and I. This was a first for all of us.

The museum is not really one for small children. Most of the exhibits involve a lot of reading and the boys lost interest quickly. That being said, I think it is awesome for our children to see that a president was born and raised right here in Grand Rapids!

Koby did however love checking out the replica of the Oval Office. I explained that this is the room in the White House where the President works. As he sat staring through the Plexiglas, he asked, "When is President Obama going to come through the doors?"

George Washington was also making an appearance at the museum today. Koby knows George was our first President and that he is on the $1 bill. When he caught a glimpse he inquired, "Is that the real George Washington?" Time is a difficult concept for Kindergartners!

Our final stop was to view the miniature White House exhibit. That was very cool. I guess I never realized just how big it truly is. Hopefully one day we will make it to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue!

drawing and photography

Koby has been working very hard on writing as of late. He has begun to write complete sentences and tries his "Kindergarten Best" when it comes to spelling. Here are a couple of his recent drawings:

"Tur-Tur is lost"

"I like my sun because it is yellow"

Like Mom, the boys love to grab my camera and take pictures. Here are some shots Koby took while behind the lens...

our conversation

Ky walked past me as I sat working on the computer,

"Mom, me have to go poop."

"Tell me when you are done" I reply.

Flush

"Ky, are you done? Did you poop?" I say, anxious for his reply seen as he just flushed and did not request any assistance with the wipe...which is not a good sign (see previous post).

"Yep, me poop."

I approach the bathroom to find him once again sitting on the bathroom floor.

I check, no signs of poop.

"Ky, did you poop?"

"Yes...me DID!"

"No you didn't Ky"

He looks up at me, "Don't you tell me no!"

(Obviously I use that statement with him a little too often. I turned away and laughed as he continued to sit on the bathroom floor saying..."My did poop. Don't you tell me know!)

so...how is it going?

I am asked that question frequently when it comes to Ky and his potty training. I am happy to say that it has gone quite well. I would say that within the first two weeks, he had pretty much mastered the skill. He is staying dry and nap time and is now wearing his big boy undies during his rest. He has been dry at night too and we will soon try for the big boy undies at night rather than a pull-up.

With that being said, this would not quite be a VanderWoude tale if the story simply ended there. Life should only be so simple. During nap last week I heard a lot of commotion going on upstairs. Frustrated with the fact that Ky was still not asleep, I went upstairs and found him sitting on the bathroom floor trying very carefully to put his big boy undies back on. I noticed some rather strange markings throughout my bathroom that had not been there earlier.

"Ky (said with emphasis), did you poop?"
"Yes, and my wiped"

"KYAN DAVID! YOU DID NOT WIPE!!!!" (as I am looking at the toilet seat and the floor which are streaked with poop...I mean, I guess technically he did wipe, he wiped with the toilet seat and the floor, just not the toilet paper!)

"Yes, my DID!" still apparently unaware of the fact that he is surrounded by poop stains!

As I stood looking at my son in the poopy bathroom, wanting to cry, scream do something...all I could do was laugh and say, "hold still...I am going to get my camera."

Question my parenting, that's okay. Perhaps it wasn't the best idea to leave my son in his disaster while I sought out my camera. But I NEEEDED to capture this moment. Because one day, I just may need it as leverage.
